Car Battery Jump starter FAQs
A:GREPOW car battery jumper boxes are amazing in their versatility. Ability to charge your phone/iPad via the integrated USB ports is a standard, some jump starters offer even more than one. Some jump starters, especially the larger ones, offer 12V connections so you can charge/power anything that is using the standard 12V plug but also 9V sockets that can charge laptops, etc.
A: Again my in-depth guide on choosing a jump starter goes through this. Typically though, the absolute minimum for most petrol sedans would be about 300A. For diesel engines, you can essentially double this figure. The lowest temperature you’re likely to need your jump starter in should also be considered. GREPOW lithium battery jump starter packs up to 2,000A, it is easy to start your car in seconds.
In very cold climates, you would need to double this figure again as the cranking capacity of the batteries inside the jump starter diminishes as temperature decreases. Lithium batteries are said to be somewhat more resistant to performance loss at lower temperatures. If you live in a region with especially low winter temperatures, then you may want to check out our best lithium-ion jump starters. Contact us for more information.
A: We can apply different kinds of battery certificates for you on your request. The UL, UL, FCC and CE are available.
A: Compact jump starters are designed to give out a massive jolt of current to jump start a vehicle, as opposed to keeping it running for long as the car’s battery does. While working at optimum capacity, the jump starter battery will deliver nothing short of enough voltage to start the engine. Again, this depends on the level of depletion as the jump start battery will need to be at optimum functionality to deliver enough voltage to crank the engine’s motor.
Speaking of size, jump starters are based on two primary battery technologies – lead-acid (like your car) and lithium-ion. Lead-acid jump starters are much larger without necessarily providing more jump starting current than lithium-ion units like the GREPOW Car Battery Booster Pack.
The lead-acid units do tend to be able to supply their rated current for a longer duration while cranking the engine, making them better for heavy-duty and professional applications. They also tend to be harder wearing than their lithium counterparts. Be sure to read our guide on how many amps to jump-start a car to help you determine how powerful your jump starter needs to be to get your engine started even in bad weather conditions.
A: The cranking amp rating – depending on the size of the engine of your vehicle(s) but usually the higher the better. Voltage – most of the car batteries are 12V but commercial trucks, RVs and machinery can have up to 24V. Check your battery for the voltage. ( Grepow can customize both 12V and 24V for you.) Cable length – again, depending on the size of the car and the size of the car battery jump starter. With small jump starters, the cable length is usually between 10 and 12″ – just to reach both terminals easily but with bigger car jump starters you might want to have longer leads (around 60″) to ensure comfortable and safe operation. Reverse-polarity protection – a handy feature for those unsure which cable goes to which car battery terminal – if you get it wrong, the jump starter will indicate and won’t let you damage your car.
Based on your needs you might want to check whether the jump starter has an integrated flashlight, USB ports, 12V outlet, or a compressor which might save you in other situations. Contact us for more information.
A: Jump starters are manufactured with varying features by different needs and therefore how you charge it depends on its type. The good thing is that most jump starters are about as easy to charge as a cell phone. They push DC current into the jump starter at a voltage typically around 15V (cell phones are at about 5V or 9V if you have a fast charger).
Simply plug the adapter that came with the jump starter into the wall and plug the other end into the unit to charge it until it says it is full. The time this takes depends on the capacity of the battery bank inside the jump box and how flat the unit is.
I often recommend, if you have the time, let it charge overnight to make sure it is full. Another point, don’t let the jump starter drain until it is completely flat if this can be avoided. This is to extend the lifetime of its batteries. Keeping it fully charged as often as possible is the best way to get the maximum life out of your jump starter.
A: Note that not all jump starters are compatible with all car models and therefore be cautious when buying one to ensure it will work for your specific requirements. Check out our post on car battery boosters to help you in thos regard.
A key consideration is to make sure the jump starter you buy is consistent with your car and its engine size. The capacity of the engine is measured in cylinder liters – the larger the capacity, the more peak current is needed from the jump starter.
An air compressor is another added feature you may want with your unit. Compressor jump starters may have an in-built compressor or may come with a separate unit, but either way, they allow you to tackle the two most common reasons for car breakdowns in one package – a dead car battery and a flat tire.
Another great tip is to get a portable jump starter that has a power bank since they are the most recommended for use in emergencies or if you are in an area without electric power.
